Medha Patkar is a senior social activist who has played a leading role in many environmental and housing rights movements. She is the pioneering activist of Narmada Bachao Andolan and the National Alliance of People’s Movement (NAPM).
Here she raises her voice for the historical injustice and repeated demolitions faced by Khori Gaon residents. She says, “if the urban poor and the farmhouses are not treated in the same manner by the Supreme court, then there can be no justice. Urban poor communities play a critical role in running the country. Stealing their homes, jobs, and their ability to deal with poverty is the biggest crime. Rehabilitation schemes nor solatium can compensate for the loss of demolition. It is the responsibility of the Supreme Court and society to deal with this form of injustice. There has to be a humanitarian solution.”
